This chapter explores the rancor surrounding the use of the N-word in educational contexts, especially in racially segregated schools. Using a case study from Oslo Cathedral School, where teachers planned to educate students on racism through literature, the chapter explores the hostile response and subsequent scandal that evolved. It examines the tension between objectives of combating racism and the prospective for misunderstanding and offense associated with racial slurs. Drawing on Randall Kennedy’s research about the intricacies of the N-word, the authors argue for a thoughtful approach to such sensitive topics in classrooms. The chapter emphasizes the need for educators to create safe spaces for difficult discussions and to navigate the historical context of language cautiously. Finally, it agitates for a principled stance on addressing systemic racism through education while inculcating a culture of understanding and mutual respect in schools, challenging students to engage critically with these crucial issues.
