This chapter focuses on how the concepts of space and place can help one understand the creation of sacred places for the assemblies of the Corinthian ekklēsia. “Space” and “place” are examined in light of contemporary fields of study such as human and cultural geography. An investigation into the terminology’s Greek background provides an ancient perspective allowing one to consider if modern understandings can be used in an ancient context. The importance of experiencing space is explored as well as how space turns into place by incorporating the three elements of place: history, identity, and behaviour. Finally, this chapter considers the idea of “placelessness” in an ancient context, investigating what it means not to have a place.
