Along with giving an overview of the project, this chapter illustrates where scholarship has been and where scholarship should go when thinking about the concept of sacred space and sacred places. The chapter provides a brief foray into the research centring on the concept of “house churches” in the first century, arguing the focus has been too narrow. By using spatial theories to consider how space becomes socially appropriated, which then can allow for that space to become sacred, one can consider how mundane spaces could potentially become sacred meeting places of worship for first-century Corinthian believers. This chapter also explains how a philological approach will be necessary to ensure the proper use of modern-day theories being applied to ancient concepts.
