European Research and Innovation in Support of Transport Safety
摘要
Safety is a fundamental requirement for the mobility of people and the transport of goods across all transport modes. Transport safety is a key focus in the European Union’s (EU) policy agenda, as outlined in the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy (European Commission, 2021). The goal of “Vision Zero” in road transport is to achieve almost zero deaths and serious injuries in European road travel by 2050. Similar efforts are necessary to maintain excellent safety standards in air, sea, and rail travel. Research and innovation play a crucial role in achieving these objectives by developing safety technologies, safety management frameworks, suggesting regulations, and providing insights into human behaviour to promote better training and a safety culture. This study aims to analyse the EU’s research and innovation efforts in transport safety, identify the main trends, and contextualise them within the overall policy objectives. The study utilises the open access Transport Research and Innovation Monitoring and Information System (TRIMIS) database ( https://trimis.ec.europa.eu ). Through this database, 143 EU-funded research and innovation projects related to transport safety were identified, with a particular focus on projects under the H2020 framework programme. By examining the scope, work, and outputs of these projects, this analysis provides an overview of the main trends in recently concluded and ongoing research.
