Trendline is a project funded by the European Commission for developing and applying a common methodology for the collection of safety performance indicators (called ‘KPI’) in the EU. 25 EU countries are fully engaged in the project; four more European countries act as an observer. Trendline starts from eight KPIs which have been defined by the European Commission. These concern speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, distracted driving, wearing helmets, wearing seatbelts and using child restraint systems, vehicle safety, safety or roads, and post-crash care. Moreover, within Trendline some newindicators have been identified and have been tested out predominantly in the course of 2024. This set includes safety indicators on driving under the influence of drugs; enforcement of traffic regulations, red-light negation and share of 30 km/h streets in urban zones. For all KPIs, international Key Expert Groups (KEGs) have been created for developing common methodological guidelines and monitoring their implementation. Within Trendline, particular attention will be paid to policy integration. Trendline is the biggest international effort for promoting the use of performance indicators within road safety policies. Most of the data has been collected in 2024 and results have become publicly available in earlt autumn 2025.
