Maglev-derived systems (MDS) are guided transportation systems containing a propulsion which is independent of any frictional interaction between wheels and the infrastructure. The current study investigates the specific friction mode safety cases in order to illustrate how a safety increase with the help of MagRail Boosters can be demonstrated using CSM (Common Safety Method). MagRail Booster is a transportation system in which rolling stock and railway infrastructure are retrofitted by equipping them with a linear motor propulsion and other necessary subsystems (power electronics, signalling, communication) to increase the capacity and extend the functionalities of legacy railway systems. The reasoning is illustrated referring to the alpian railway line of the Cluse Valley, providing a representative industrial example of freight traffic. The potential contribution of the considered technology to the safety demonstration of a driverless freight train is discussed at the end of the paper.

摘要
