This chapter deals with the bitter confrontation between Archbishop Hernando Guerrero, OSA, and the Governor General of the Philippines, Don Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, which shaped Manila as a political arena. This specific case of political clashes between the two swords shows how difficult it was to navigate the troubled waters of the two universal powers, the spiritual for the archbishop and the temporal for the royal institutions, and the dramatic consequences for both. It also shows how a rigid and dogmatic interpretation of the royal patronage left the Church under the strict control of the political authorities.
