The right to play is inextricably interrelated with the child’s right to identity (Article 8). Understanding identity in this light foregrounds a child-centred approach which emphasises the playful attitude, playful activity and relationship building as being central to the child’s developing identity. Identity is, at least in part, a subjective, relational and dynamic concept so the proper framework for its development must likewise place importance on the imaginative, experiential and relational aspects of play.
