In this chapter, a brief review of ancient to current approaches to understanding the morphology and function of the hippocampus is performed. We study the notes of Aranzio, the achievements of Duvernoy, the innovations of Félix Vicq d’Azyr, and the important contributions of other physicians such as Vesalius, Willis, Varolio, Eustachio, and Lancisi, and finally, the modern-era studies. The hippocampus, as an important brain compartment, remains a challenging subject in human anatomy, neuroanatomy, and neurosurgery worldwide.
