People need inclusion in community to heal from addiction, but are healthcare systems prepared for inclusion? By criminalizing addiction, social policy has enforced and normalized exclusion, first through stigmatizing narratives, then through incarceration, systemic barriers to housing and employment, and unwelcoming environments in social institutions including healthcare. In this chapter, we will unpack how systemic exclusion and engagement suppression have influenced how healthcare approaches people with addictions. We will explore how interdisciplinary teams can transform care to be more inclusive and more effective with Inclusion Health principles (Luchenski et al. Lancet, 391(10117), 266–280, 2018; NHS England, A national framework for NHS – action on inclusion health, 2023). Finally we will describe how one Inclusion Health team works to engage and support people who are, understandably, not comfortable in traditional primary care settings.
