Substance use disorders are complex, multi-factorial conditions that require an interdisciplinary approach to treatment for best outcomes. One of many of these modalities is medication. FDA-approved medications are available for alcohol, opioid, and tobacco use disorders. Discussions of these medications’ development, mechanisms of action, and availability are provided in this chapter. Most importantly, considerations are given as to the best practices of incorporating medications as part of a whole person approach.
