This chapter gives a critical account of rehabilitation efforts in a former gold mining valley in southern France, ongoing since the 1990s. It begins by outlining the chronology of the work undertaken, and then describes the epistemic cultures and sociotechnical imaginaries of the professionals involved in post-mining management. The focus is to understand their vision of the future, characterized by modernity, which confines them to a reductive view of materials as inert resources and manageable residues. The argument more specifically addresses a controversy regarding the method used to calculate the geochemical background, which has allowed some professionals to “naturalize” arsenic levels in the soil. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the often-overlooked political dimension of rehabilitation.

摘要
