Artificial Intelligence (AI) provides many social and economic benefits for the mining industry through productivity increase, time and costs reduction, mining transition phases acceleration, and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices enhancement. However, there are challenges that cause slowness in AI implantation in the mining industry related to technical, data, human resources, and financial issues. The aim of this research paper is to explore the impact of AI on organizational sustainability in mining industry, by taking Minerals Development Oman company (MDO) in the Sultanate of Oman as a case study. This research study uses a qualitative case study method to explore the interviewees view on the current/upcoming AI applications at MDO, their perceptions on the benefits and challenges of AI applications, and their views on how to promote and enhance the implementation of AI applications. This research paper is the first study to empirically explore the impact of AI on organizational sustainability in mining industry in the Omani context. The findings of this research paper would provide useful implications for researchers and practitioners and would add significant contribution to better understand sustainability in mining industry in different cultural and organizational context. To maximize the benefits of AI and to tackle AI implementation challenges in the mining industry, more efforts are needed by AI modelers, organizations’ management, and researchers. Therefore, future studies may discuss the management theories (integrated or individual) and its relationship to overcome AI implementation challenges in the mining industry.
