This chapter explores Institutional Courage as a crucial framework for addressing Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) within the context of Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5), set forth by the United Nations (UN). It examines how Institutional Courage can be used to promote truth, moral action, and accountability in combating VAWG, despite significant challenges and risks. The chapter discusses the UN’s pivotal role in shaping global discourse on VAWG by advancing gender equality through legislative reforms, empowering women’s leadership, and campaigning against harmful practices such as child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). At the same time, it acknowledges ongoing obstacles, including deep-seated gender norms, disparities in legal frameworks, economic inequalities, and the exacerbation of VAWG during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these barriers, the chapter underscores the importance of SDG 5 as a symbol of hope, advocating for comprehensive, survivor-centred strategies to create a world free from VAWG.
