This chapter analyses the case of Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics doctor who has sexually abused numerous young female athletes under the guise of medical treatments. He exploited systemic institutional failures within Michigan State University (MSU), United States Gymnastics (USAG), and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) to conceal his crimes. Employing the D.A.R.V.O. strategy, Nassar denied allegations, attacked survivors’ credibility, and portrayed himself as a victim of an unjust legal process. Despite this, survivors and victims’ families persisted, leading to Nassar’s conviction under Judge Rosemarie Aquilina. This judge’s unprecedented decision to invite survivors to deliver Victim Impact Statements exemplified “Institutional Courage”, offering a trauma-informed approach that empowered survivors to confront their experiences. The analysis of a corpus of Victim Impact Statements (VIScor) reveals Aquilina’s efforts to create a space of safety, remembrance, and reconnection, which helped dismantle self-blame and fostered collective healing. By facilitating survivors’ journeys towards recovery and hope, Judge Aquilina embodied Institutional Courage, challenging Institutional Betrayal and setting a precedent for addressing Violence against Women and Girls.
