This chapter covers the investigative procedures for obtaining victim and witness accounts, and eyewitness identifications. Many factors influence the accuracy and credibility of memory recall and eyewitness identification, including memory contamination, witness age, cognition level, or the suspect’s race. The investigative procedures must be modified to address these factors, including the types of interview questions, methods of obtaining witness statements, and suspect identifications. This chapter also covers interviews and statements from children and those with disabilities such as autism or intellectual disability and what precautions police should take. This chapter concludes with considerations and recommendations from experts in the field for best practices for conducting interviews and obtaining eyewitness identifications.
