Also provided is an overview of the major components and functions of the criminal justice system, including the appellate court system, ideal for readers without an extensive background or those unfamiliar with legal terms. This chapter also includes background information on the role of the mental health system in the criminal justice system, and the development of the Sequential Intercept Model. This model identifies contact points in the criminal justice system to highlight the necessary resources to support or divert individuals from further involvement in the system.
