At this time of development, there is still a shared oronasal cavity; separation does not occur until the palate will be formed between the 9th and 12th week. At least at this stage, the primary palate can already be seen, in the histological section (Fig. 7.1) showing well how the tip of the tongue lies cephal to it. It also still has contact with the nasal septum and the region of the later anterior skull base at this stage.
