At this stage, a 3D reconstruction of the mandible was only possible in its anterior part because the fetal material was divided into different segments by macro-preparation. Some parts of Meckel’s cartilage are still recognizable although it has been largely degraded in its anterior course. Irrespective of this, individual separate cartilage islands are still detectable in the mandible, as in the previous stages. The compartmentalization of the bone for the dental primordia has remained largely the same: general bone apposition, especially at the inter-dental septa, but also bone resorption inside the crypts, which compensates for the growth of the dental primordia (Figs. 37.1, 37.2, and 37.3).
