The cartilage islands in the mandible can only be reliably assessed in their spatial relationship if the 3D-reconstructions are displayed transparently. In this fetus, Meckel’s cartilage shows a continuity only up to the primordium of m1. Further anteriorly, singular remnants of Meckel’s cartilage can be identified on the lingual aspects of the incisor primordia. Additional small cartilaginous islets, which were not in the course of Meckel’s cartilage, are found buccally to all the deciduous primordia and also lingually to the central incisor primordium. They can be seen as single centers within the brim of the alveolar bone. In addition, laterally to the inferior alveolar vein cartilaginous tissue is to be also found within the mandibular bone (Figs. 32.1, 32.2, 32.3, 32.4, and 32.5).
