Many textbooks classically hold the view that the mandible arises from purely desmal ossification. This is certainly also due to the idea that wants to derive the formation of the mandible in humans also phylogenetically—and it is, therefore, described as a purely desmal ossifying bone. However, if we look at the biological facts, then at this stage of development we can clearly see many small cartilaginous centers in the ossifying mandible, which are certainly not any part of Meckel’s cartilage, which is of course also gradually replaced by bone (Radlanski et al. 2016). There are isolated cartilage centers in the anterior region and others are preferably located in the spandrel between the dental units, on the buccal side. More details hereto in Chap. 30 . And then there are the cartilaginous cores in the condylar and coronoid processes (Fig. 27.1).
