This embryo is so beautifully developed that we can show it in this chapter in many reconstructions and in different views in great detail. The orbitae are already preformed cartilaginously; the nasal capsule is impressive in the midface; the frontal bones and the maxilla have also already spread out considerably and the maxilla shows extensions of the frontal processes on either side of the nasal capsule, the zygomatic arches are recognizable laterally and the mandible has not yet fused in the symphysis, but already shows the beginnings of the condylar and coronoid processes at either of its dorsal ends. At this stage, however, there is still the primary temporomandibular joint, i.e., the malleus (dorsal end of Meckel’s cartilage) articulates with the incus. The actual, the secondary temporomandibular joint does not yet exist. But the structures in the inner ear and the semicircular canals are also beautifully developed. All the muscles including of course the tongue are already well formed and also the salivary glands (Figs. 19.1, 19.2, 19.3, 19.4, 19.5, 19.6, 19.7, 19.8, 19.9, 19.10, 19.11, 19.12, 19.13, 19.14, and 19.15).
