Although this embryo is listed in the data sheet with a crown-rump length of 22 mm and thus has an estimated age of about 7 weeks. However, the morphological findings show a less mature mandible. The two cartilage braces of Meckel’s cartilage show their malleus-forming extensions dorsally, do not meet at the middle of the chin, but maintain a distance of about 500 μm. Also, the bone formation of the mandible is less developed and represents only a flat bony plate, even in front still far apart. Both, cartilage and bone run almost straight, show no curves, but stand in a not very acutely pointed V to each other (see Figs. 11.3 and 11.4). The inferior alveolar nerve runs in the space between cartilage and bone—a groove, as already developed in the previous embryos, does not exist here yet. The mental foramen is still open obliquely anteriorly at the top. This finding should not be surprising, but rather shows the variability of size, age, and state of maturity (Figs. 11.1, 11.2, 11.3, 11.4 and 11.5).
