In this chapter, I will explore Boesch’s conceptualization of “action potential.” This exploration stems from an autoethnographic challenge I encountered in grappling with the term “action potential,” and aims to clarify the mechanisms underlying the concept. Specifically, I will demonstrate that the notion of action potential encompasses aesthetic, teleological, and temporal features—spanning past and future—regulated by the interplay between personal and social “should-values.” Additionally, I will apply the concept of action potential to the analysis of a political vignette from Germany, offering unique insights into the nature of politics. I encourage the reader to embrace Boesch’s dynamic and insightful concept of action potential, which, rather than being a source of personal confusion, provides valuable psychological understanding.
