Culture-Specific and Mass-Mediated Translation: Dubbing Trevor Nunn’s Twelfth Night into Italian
摘要
This chapter examines what happens when Shakespeare is dubbed into Italian. Taking the case of Trevor Nunn’s 1996 film version of Twelfth Night, the chapter looks at the challenges of producing a dubbing track that not only makes sense of the play and its highly culturally specific (and therefore presumably unfamiliar) references, but that also sounds right in relation to what spectators are watching. The chapter highlights a range of creative solutions, including the use of translations that replicate the sonorities and comedic delivery of the original English dialogue, which make the dubbed Twelfth Night more accessible and engaging for Italian audiences, but simultaneously shut down possibilities for understanding some of its more culturally specific aspects.
