In this chapter, the author introduces the concept of shared traumatic reality (STR) as a result of war and terror. Based on a systematic literature review, she describes the development of STR in this context and the negative and positive terminologies used to refer to it. In addition, based on the critical reflections of professional experiences and new insights gained during the most recent Israel–Hamas war of 2023-2025 and on a group discussion with displaced residents, a new “STR bar” is offered. This bar, regarding clients’ and workers’ complex perceptions of a collective STR, can be implemented during the client–worker encounter and serve as a means for strengthening workers’ capability and professionalism. It offers a practical way to fine-tune trauma-workers’ understanding of both parties’ experiences. In the discussion section, the author recommended that the STR concept include a wider typology of shared traumatic events and tools, in order to reflect a range of different shared realities, especially in a long-term war-related collective trauma. Several limitations and recommendations are made for educators, trauma-workers, supervisors, and managers when working in STR situations resulting from war and terror.
