The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects the mandible to the skull. The joint allows multiple complex jaw movements such as chewing, talking, and yawning. Because of the anatomic complexity and its proximity to the temporal bone, mastoid air cells, and auditory structures, ultrasound guidance is mandatory for aspiration and injection of the TMJ. In this chapter, we will review the anatomy and function of the TMJ and introduce the indications and techniques of the ultrasound-guided intervention for the TMJ.
