This chapter presents physics of lightning, its development in thunderstorm clouds, and its destructive electrical nature. Additionally, this chapter considers the first (main) lightning strike and second subsequent strikes with their direct and indirect effects on objects and structures (such as toll buildings and towers) and radio systems on the Earth. The chapters also describe the protection methods for radio system equipment and radio facilities against lightning strikes by dedicated safety grounding systems and high-current surge protectors.
