Fundamentals of Photoluminescent Materials
摘要
Photoluminescent materials, characterized by their ability to absorb and re-emit light, have revolutionized diverse scientific and technological fields, including biomedical, lighting, display, and sensing applications. This chapter explores the fundamental principles of photoluminescent materials, such as photon absorption, energy transitions, and emission processes, while illustrating distinctions between fluorescence and phosphorescence. It categorizes materials like semiconductor nanocrystals, organic fluorophores, and lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, focusing on their critical roles in advanced medical diagnostics. Synthesis techniques, such as sol–gel processes and hybrid material fabrication, are discussed to underscore recent innovations improving efficiency and scalability. Real-world applications, from high-resolution bioimaging to energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and anti-counterfeiting fluorescent inks, are highlighted alongside critical challenges like stability, environmental resilience, and cost-effective scalability. Addressing these issues through interdisciplinary research, hybrid designs, and emerging eco-friendly alternatives, the chapter concludes with an outlook on emerging trends, establishing a foundation for future exploration and innovation in photoluminescent materials.
