‘I Prefer Robot Cats!’ Reflections on Robot Animal-Like Morphology from an in-the-Wild Child-Robot Interaction Workshop

This study is based on an in-the-wild child-robot interaction event involving 100 children aged 7 to 9. The children interacted with four distinct robots: Pepper, Nao, Misty, and MiRo-E, during a workshop designed to explore their engagement with these robots through various activities. Audio and video recordings captured these interactions, providing rich data for analysis. This study focuses on the MiRo-E robot and investigates how specific animal-like features, such as appearance, lifelike behaviors, and sounds, influence children’s engagement and emotional connections with robots. The findings reveal that children tend to favor robots resembling domestic animals, such as dogs or cats, due to their approachable appearance. Furthermore, robots designed with ambiguous, creature-like features, evoking multiple animal species, elicit heightened interest and fascination. This suggests that morphing features blending both animal and robotic characteristics are particularly appealing to children. These preferences underscore the significance of robot morphology in fostering deeper engagement and emotional connections. The study offers design recommendations, emphasizing the critical role of animal-like features in enhancing user experience, particularly for interactive and educational robotic technologies designed for children.
