In the year 1878, Heinrich Baum, who worked at Farbwerke ML&B in Frankfurt-Hoechst, Germany, discovered the so-called Ponceau dyes. The Ponceaus are named after the colour of flowers, namely those of the wild corn poppy (Papaver rhoeas L., family Papaveraceae), just like Mauveine and Fuchsine. They can be divided into two groups: dyes prepared from 2-naphthol-3,6-disulfonic acid (R-acid), such as Ponceau 2G, Ponceau 2R, Bordeaux R and Amaranth; and dyes prepared from 2-naphthol-6,8-disulfonic acid (G-acid), like Orange G, Crystal Ponceau 6R and Cochineal red A. Ponceau 6R is prepared from 2-naphthol-3,6,8-trisulfonic acid. The colours of the Ponceaus have a range from orange to scarlet and Bordeaux red or maroon, a deep, rather sombre red. The dyes prepared from R-acid show red to dark-red tints, while the dyes derived from G-acid have yellowish-red to red hues. The Ponceaus are used for dyeing animal fibres such as wool and silk.
