Born in Conroe, TexasTexas in 1946, Mel DavisDavis, Mel is a veteran singer, harmonicaharmonica and saxophonesaxophone player, who moved to AustinAustin in the early 1970s. A cousin of T-Bone WalkerT-Bone Walker, father of electric Texas bluesblues guitarguitar, Davis worked with two pioneers of postwar blues in Austin: singer-guitarist T. D. BellBell, T.D. and pianist ErbieErbie BowserErbie BowserErbie Bowser, who performed in East AustinEast Austin since the 1950s. In 1987, after seeing them perform at the iconic Continental ClubContinental Club, in South Congress, he became a member of their band, The Blues SpecialistsThe Blues Specialists. He continued to play with them until their passing in the late 1990s, participating in the album It’s About Time (1992), by T. D. Bell and ErbieErbie BowserErbie Bowser, as well as in numerous gigs and festivals. Along with these mentors, he also backed another legendary Texas bluesman, Roosevelt “Grey GhostGrey Ghost” Williams.
