Originally born as a rural, African-American musical expression within the Jim CrowJim Crow era Deep South, the evolution of bluesblues throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has been intimately related to the development of cities. Accordingly, the genre’s groundbreaking expansion from the isolated margins of society towards an increasing visibility in the mediatized public sphere has been marked by the creation of geographically grounded subgenres that reflect a dialectical interplay between popular music and contemporary landscapes: Delta blues, ChicagoChicago blues, TexasTexas blues, west coast blues, British blues and so on. This paper focuses on the construction of a blues scene in AustinAustin, Texas, a major center for contemporary popular music that is officially known and marketed as the “Live Music Capital of the WorldLive Music Capital of the World.”
