Apparent leukonychia, a nail bed abnormality, can be differentiated from true leukonychia, a nail plate abnormality, by applying pressure to the nail plate and observing that leukonychia dissipates. Terry’s nails (total apparent leukonychia) are a common finding in patients with hepatic cirrhosis but can be seen in other systemic illnesses or normal aging. On clinical diagnosis of Terry’s nails, evaluation for underlying associated systemic etiology should be considered, if not already known.

摘要

Apparent leukonychia, a nail bed abnormality, can be differentiated from true leukonychia, a nail plate abnormality, by applying pressure to the nail plate and observing that leukonychia dissipates. Terry’s nails (total apparent leukonychia) are a common finding in patients with hepatic cirrhosis but can be seen in other systemic illnesses or normal aging. On clinical diagnosis of Terry’s nails, evaluation for underlying associated systemic etiology should be considered, if not already known.
