This chapter examines tourism development in fragile terrains such as rural areas or remote islands, where economic opportunities explored by tourism imply specific socio-spatial challenges. Geographic isolation, resource scarcity or technological constraints limit economic prospects, often leading to the formation of tourism enclaves, separated from local communities. Integrative diversification strategies, including the creation of thematic routes or the development of integrated wellness tourism services emerge as possible alternatives, fostering economic and spatial connectivity while enhancing visitor experiences. The chapter also explores political dimensions of this type of tourism development, analyzing how the “tourist gaze,” staged authenticity or dominant narratives shape perceptions of place, heritage and memory. Large-scale events, media-driven tourism and institutional interventions are also examined for their role in similar contexts.
