Differential reinforcement of alternative behavior is one of the most common interventions for increasing appropriate behavior (e.g., communication, accurate responses) and decreasing target behavior (e.g., challenging behavior, erroneous responses). This chapter describes specific steps for durability strategies during interventions based on differential reinforcement of alternative behavior. Included is a tutorial on specific tactics (e.g., teaching loosely, multiple-exemplar teaching) that are likely to promote durable treatment effects during differential reinforcement of alternative behavior. To assist readers in applying these concepts, the authors describe the aforementioned tactics within the context of how their program incorporates such practices into its typical care for individuals with autism.
