Songwriting Techniques in Music Therapy
摘要
Songwriting is a music therapy intervention involving the creation of music, lyrics, or music and lyrics within a supportive therapeutic relationship. Qualified music therapists can use songwriting in various clinical settings and for people without music training or sophisticated musicians, in group and individual formats, within single sessions or across multiple sessions, in-person or via telehealth, as well as with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Through songwriting, music therapists can empower service users with creative ways to share their narratives, name their problems, explore solutions, find hope, and express themselves and their musical identities. As a flexible music therapy intervention, music therapists can use songwriting to address a plethora of clinical objectives and help service users develop, name, and reinforce their identities and sense of self and experience relief, validation, and joy. This chapter provides an overview of songwriting for music therapy students and professionals. The author uses flow and processes and products within therapy as theoretical frameworks to explain and understand songwriting. To facilitate songwriting in clinical settings, the author describes contextual factors including the service users, music, structure, format and environment, clinical objectives, and the philosophical approach of the music therapist. Based on clinical work in adult mental health settings, the author provides a songwriting protocol and a notated example of a composition. Songwriting can be a powerful intervention and music therapists using songwriting should practice reflexivity and emotional intelligence to maintain their wellbeing as well as to continue developing their songwriting skills.
