Music Therapy and Research: Qualitative and Quantitative Points of View
摘要
The topic of research in music therapy has gained considerable importance in the music therapy community nowadays. The scenery is not devoid of debates and different positions on the recognition of its urgency as an essential basis for the integration between theoretical approach and clinical practice. Among the different methodological perspectives of approaching the study of music therapy we can distinguish between studies oriented to a quantification of the intervention effects, through a process of operationalization of the variables involved, and studies that privilege a more qualitative approach, involving the researcher and the user in a process that aims to construct an interpretative description of the phenomenon and its mechanisms. Alongside these schools of thought, a possible combination of the two points of view is proposed in an evolving methodology, represented by the mixed-methods perspective. A number of aspects that could guide the management of research toward the process of recognition of the discipline are outlined through an analysis of the main strengths and weaknesses of the current situation in music therapy research.
