Marine autonomous systems require autonomy to operate within an environment that is dynamic and harsh for navigation, sensing, and communications. This chapter presents the marine autonomous system challenges and how the autonomy enables operations despite them, and then reviews what the methods the community has used for their verification. It concludes with suggestions on future research work.
