This final chapter focuses on economic, social, and other practical considerations of off-grid electrification. The levelized cost of energy concept and calculation is introduced, which offers insight to the cost of supplying electricity. The various tariff structures for off-grid systems are discussed, as is the role of regulations and standards. The need to monitor and evaluate off-grid programs is highlighted, as is the importance of community engagement and capacity-building. Other topics include applications requiring heightened reliability, electricity theft, use of donated equipment, substandard and counterfeit components, and human-powered electricity generation.
