Agro-industries generate large amounts of waste which, when improperly disposed of, negatively impact the environment and public health. The improper disposal of wood waste, sugarcane bagasse, animal bone waste from the meat industry, and even residues from grain production industries, through burning or inappropriate dumping, can release toxic gases, contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, and facilitate the proliferation of pathogens. Thus, the objective of this chapter was to discuss the key variables related to the improper management of agro-industrial waste and its environmental consequences, highlighting bioproducts obtained through the pyrolysis process, such as biochar and bonechar, as potential solutions. To this end, the chapter addresses the impacts of population growth on increased agro-industrial production and waste generation, the problems associated with the improper disposal of these byproducts—such as landfill deposition and burning—and the potential of biochar and bonechar, which not only enable the sustainable reuse of these materials but also serve as materials capable of remediating contaminated soils, water sources, and effluents. Consequently, it can be observed that using these residues for the production of sustainable materials minimizes environmental impacts, reduces the consumption of non-renewable resources, and promotes a circular economy, contributing to sustainable development and ecosystem preservation. Furthermore, the pyrolysis process that produces these bioproducts requires the adoption of low-cost technologies, promoting industrial symbiosis, reducing environmental impact, and creating economically viable opportunities, aligning with sustainable development goals and contributing to the reduction of waste generated by agro-industries.
