The chapter provides an overview of Greek development banking in the period 1963–2002. The analysis illustrates the role of the three Greek development banks of the era (ETBA, ETEBA, and TE) in both their financing of leading sectors in the Greek economy and initiating institutional change at various levels. It also assesses their financial performance thus, arguing that the major risk they faced during their operation was in fact an institutional-political risk closely related to their dependence on the prevailing financial regime and government support. The analysis will be based on primary sources concerning balance sheet and income statement data for the three banks, their annual reports, and other related material.
