Happiness Makers for the Brain
摘要
Chocolate is the favorite treat of the Germans, and the absolute star among the happiness makers. It consists of 600 flavor components. Studies from the USA show that 50% of Americans would rather give up sex than chocolate. Our brain rejoices at the sight of it, because it knows and remembers the velvety feeling on the tongue and the satisfied happiness after enjoying chocolate. The nucleus accumbens, a small nucleus in the forebrain responsible for pleasure and happiness, is particularly alert in this regard. It is part of the reward system, a whole network that can be activated in various ways. A small compliment or a hearty laugh, recognition and tenderness, or the enjoyment of a great meal is enough. Experiments show that the combination of sugar and fat is particularly effective, and chocolate is unbeatable in this respect. The miraculous nucleus is stimulated by the happiness-bringing hormone dopamine and then sends its excitation potentials to other brain areas, such as the hippocampus, the seat of memory, and the amygdala, which is responsible for emotions, pleasure, and joy.
