Achieving the goals set out by the 2030 Sustainability Agenda involves more than strategies for making environmental protection an important aspect of development. Achieving the goals (including planning for the circular economy) requires an approach that is inclusive of human and social development, consideration of what is in the best interest of local stakeholders and their ecosystem, ethical considerations, addressing issues of corporate social responsibility, and consideration of moral responsibilities. Consequently, to realize the goal social action aims to achieve, the standard must include more than just a focus on wealth. Economic performance is one aspect of what is taken into consideration for improving the quality of social life. But, in addition, consideration must be given to the types of value that has worth in both tangible and intangible terms, what contributes to flourishing, what enriches and elevates the human experience, and what creates prosperity. The term prosperity is used to imply wealth but also because it has broader implications, which include thriving, doing and living well, and experiencing sustainable peace. This chapter examines sustainability from an ethical perspective with a special emphasis on why the ethics of the sustainability concept play a special role in successfully implementing a holistic, balanced, inclusive, and multidimensional approach to future planning. This chapter argues that by including an ethical perspective in sustainability planning, it is possible to establish a standard for achieving multi-dimensional aims, which include increasing human and social well-being. In other words, if sustainability is a value that a society aims to achieve, it is possible to make predictions about the value orientation, ethics, and practices that are best for achieving its sustainability goals.
