Mental Health for the Military Surgeon
摘要
Mental resilience is critical to life as a surgeon and a successful military career. Physical health impacts emotional health. All medical careers will experience poor patient outcomes, and learning to live through and thrive from those challenging events is crucial. Military careers have the added stress of deployments, military training commitments, and, often, low case volume that seems to stifle professional development. Adopting a productive outlook during the daily challenges of military medicine can avert long-term pessimism. Taking intentional and meaningful time is essential to cultivate relationships, friendships, and support systems. Meditation is a tool that can help train the attention to be more present in these relationships and everyday life. Much of emotional health depends on the quality of inner thoughts, and learning to control these can improve happiness. Finally, continuing to work toward goals and accomplish challenges is significant in achieving contentment. There are substantial resources for military surgeons who need assistance with mental health.
