The twentieth century ended with an unprecedented territorial spread of democracy. It was an absolute historical novelty, a legacy of the last part of the twentieth century during which many authoritarian and totalitarian states imploded and “the term democracy assumed a universally recognised laudatory meaning” (Sartori, 1987a, p. 33).
