In the book’s conclusion, I turn toward the future, attempting to find ways that we can use careful consideration of the structure of integrative promise to offer recommendations for biological practice. If integrative promise is really as important to biology as I’ve argued here, then we should take it as a goal to cultivate each of its component parts. I begin by detailing a number of reasons for which interdisciplinary work is difficult to sustain in the contemporary academy, making inter-domain integration particularly challenging. I then explore the possibility of open science, particularly data reuse, for bolstering the prospects for opportunism. The kind of stringency that is required by promise is threatened, I claim, by the lack of publication of negative results; the same is true for the lack of engagement between science and ethics and policy for the resolution of socially important problems. I close with a brief summary.
