Loss and Grief: Concepts and Types
摘要
This chapter clarifies the concepts and types of losses and grief, providing basic strategies to support each. While death-related grief has been central in grief studies, nonfinite losses are gaining increased attention. Secondary losses emerge from the consequences and changing circumstances of the primary loss, posing additional challenges to adaptation. Ambiguous loss and disenfranchised grief, as less-acknowledged forms of grief, require recognition and validation to heal. Collective grief, anticipatory grief, and disenfranchised grief highlight the need for contextual considerations and relational approaches instead of approaches narrowly focused on individuals. The chapter also examines the recent inclusion of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) as well as its implications for clinical practice and raised concerns. The chapter argues for a balanced perspective that avoids pathologization or overdiagnosis while ensuring proper support for those whose daily functioning is severely affected.
