Commercial fishing of pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha), introduced to the Euro-Arctic region from the Russian Far East in the 20th century, is currently of significant economic importance. The abundance of this species is rapidly increasing. Wild pink salmon feeding in North Atlantic waters provide high-quality protein in a balanced diet providing a wide range of essential nutrients and micronutrients. However, despite the significant recent increase in spawning pink salmon numbers, the micronutrient content of this species remains largely unstudied. This study assessed the content of essential and non-essential microelements in the body of pink salmon from the Kola and Tuloma rivers (the Barents Sea) and the Umba and Varzuga rivers (the White Sea), and a comparative assessment is given with the levels of microelements in pink salmon from the Sakhalin-Kuril region rivers.
