This chapter provides a brief history of Canadian workplace law and social sustainability and focuses on how employment lawyers can shape corporate social responsibility at the workplace. The author’s own professional experiences and career as an employment lawyer are included as examples of building a career in social sustainability. Social sustainability enables growth through the promotion and availability of new markets, business partners, and sources of innovation. Employment opportunities, workplace safety, and equity are core parts of social sustainability. Canadian laws recognize the significance of work in our communities and the importance of removing barriers to an individual’s ability to earn a living and contribute to society through their work. Employment lawyers must know and consider these laws when advising clients—in other words, employment lawyers are social sustainability lawyers. And, as social expectations and working conditions continue to change, lawyers have an opportunity to influence the future of social sustainability initiatives. Employment lawyers play an important role in defining the line between voluntary social responsibility and mandatory legal obligations and will influence how our laws need to adapt in the face of artificial intelligence, economic transition, flexible work arrangements, and contract-based work.

摘要
